Old leaking pipes and heat is a recipe to breed mold. We get plenty of
heat in Los Angeles, even in the winter time. Of course if we are lucky
enough to get rain too, that is also a perfect breeding ground for mold spores.
We understand you may want to share your home with family and pets but
you do not want to live in a residence that has mold or mildew. Mold is
hazardous to your health.
In order for mold to grow it must have a food source such as cotton, wood
or drywall. Of course these are very common and are found in every home.
Mold also needs oxygen, heat and moisture to thrive. Take a leaking pipe,
in a warm residence near wood or drywall, and, well you get the picture.
Unfortunately, leaking pipes are not always detected quickly. The worst
leaks are often hidden from view like inside a wall. By the time the leaking
pipe is discovered, mold has probably started to grow. A musty or mildew
smell is a sure sign that mold has taken up residence.
According to Dr. Thrasher, PhD, at least 25% or more of all homes are believed
to be affected by mold. People who are sensitive to mold may experience
various symptoms ranging from nasal stuffiness, eye irritation or wheezing
to more severe allergic reactions.
Getting rid of mold problem can prove to be a challenge as well as a costly
endeavor. If a leaking pipe has caused mold or mildew in your carpets
or even wooden or particle board items, they will need to be removed and replaced.
Besides furnishing a breeding ground for mold, leaking pipes can also destroy
your floors or even your foundation if the water leaks under a tile floor.
